The higher education of major countries in Europe and America developed rapidly in the 19 th century.During this period,Germany,Britain,France,the United States and other countries established a number of new universities and embarked on the path of university modernization.In the 19 th century,the New University Movement not only changed the structure of education in Britain,but also promoted the transformation of education,which made high education from tradition to modern.This thesis takes the New University Movement in the 19 th century as the research object and takes the development of the new universities as the main line to present the appearance of the New University Movement in the UK.The thesis divides the whole movement into four stages,namely,the beginning,the development,the climax and the end.Contents include the reason of the new university movement,the establishment of a new university,the reformists and conservatives in the struggle,the comparison between different university,the return of City College and thinking.,the scale and characteristics of different periods of new universities and so on.Show the charm of the new university movement in the process.This thesis consists of three parts: introduction,the text and ending.The text is divided into four chapters.The introduction introduces the selected topic reason and the significance,summarized the domestic and foreign research situation of the new university movement.This part elaborates the research method,the innovation points and the difficult points,in addition,it also defines the concept of the New University Movement.The first chapter is about the beginning of the New University Movement in the 1820 s.This stage mainly analyzes the causes of the New University Movement,shows the process of university college London,and discusses the nature,curriculum and examination system of the University of London before 1836.The second chapter studies the development stage of the New University Movement(From the late 1820 s to the late 1940s).This part presents the appearance of King's College in three aspects: college purpose,college establishment process and the battle between King's College and University College London.At the same time,the paper makes a comparative analysis of the main similarities and differences between King's College and University College London,and takes the time as the clue to elaborate the changes about functions and natures of the University of London in this chapter.The third chapter studies the prosperity stage of the New University Movement(From the 1950 s to the late 1990s).The third chapter analyzes the reason and process of the emergence of civic colleges,and summarizes the characteristics of emerging process of civic colleges.Finally,the differences between the colleges and the traditional universities are discussed from the perspective of the relationship between the college and the city.The fourth chapter studies the end stage of the New University Movement(Beginning of the 20 th century).This chapter focuses on the college's departure and regression of the tradition of higher education,as well as the direct impact of the return of the civic colleges.The last section analyzes the phenomenon of the return of civic colleges.The paper summarizes the characteristics,significance and enlightenment of the new university movement in the end,as well as the division of stage.
