Master of Science in Information Science is the foundation and key to cultivating high-level intelligence talents.After decades of development,China's information science master's degree education has made some achievements,but with the arrival of the era of big data and the changes in the demand for information service talents,information science education is facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges,how to build an information science postgraduate education system adapted to the environment of big data,and how to train high-level intelligence personnel adapted to social needs have attracted the attention of the academic community and the industry.This paper uses comparative research method to explore the development status and differences of the master's education in information science between China and America,and then puts forward some suggestions,in order to benefit the better development of the information science graduate education and deepen theoretical research under the big data environment.The information science major in America started early,the education level is relatively developed,and the teaching system is relatively perfect.Therefore,the information science postgraduate education in America has a great reference for our country.In this paper,59 and 51 Master of Information Science training institutions were selected from China and America respectively.The status quo of master of information science postgraduate education in China and America was presented from four aspects: training objectives,training orientation,curriculum setting and social needs.It also compares and analyzes the differences,advantages and disadvantages of the postgraduate education of information science in the two countries.The results show that the following problems exist in the postgraduate education of information science in China: the training objectives are relatively general and lack of characteristics;the training direction is focused on traditional directions such as information retrieval and information resource management,while the emerging big data and cloud computing have not been included in thetraining orientation in time;and there is a tendency of emphasizing theory rather than practice in the curriculum design.In order to solve these problems,we can make changes in the following aspects: setting training objectives rationally,optimizing curriculum,improving teaching methods,and renewing training orientation based on social needs.
