A Study On The Localization Of Chinese Textbook In Thailand

Textbook is one of the three elements of foreign Chinese teaching.With the change of internationalization of foreign Chinese teaching,country-specific textbook has become a new trend of textbook compilation.In recent years,Chinese education gets booming development in Thailand,the number of learners increases rapidly and learners cover all the education levels.In order to meet the needs of Chinese teaching in Thailand,a relatively rich variety of textbooks are available there,including some textbooks present localized characteristics.The textbook"Basic Chinese"complied by Professor Ren Jingwen is one of the localized textbooks,used in Thailand,that is edited for beginners.The research methods vary from documentary study,questionnaire method,comparative and inductive method,etc.This article takes the textbook "Basic Chinese,complied by Professor Ren Jingwen as an example and summarize its compiling style,speech sounds,vocabulary,grammar,Chinese character,theme and culture comprehensively.Then by comparing the questionnaires of textbook evaluation with those of localization evaluation,summarize its features,localized characteristics,advantages and deficiencies.It is suggested that Thai localized textbooks should be designed and compiled from the following aspects:noting by moderate native language,focusing on the contrast between Chinese and Thai,adding localized common vocabulary,choosing topics that are close to the learner's life,adding a moderate amount of the content of Thai culture.And the arrangement of pronunciation,vocabulary,Chinese characters,grammar and Chinese characters should be adapted to the situation of local learners.Then,a survey questionnaire is also administered to identify the problems met in the use of localized textbooks.In the last part of this paper,through the analysis of all the investigation results,six ideas on how to write and use the localized textbooks are put forward.
