Case Study On Social Work In Young Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer

Based on literature review of young breast cancer patients,advanced cancer patients and social work,and guided by the professional theories and methods of social work-case study,this paper was conducted combining four-month internship in the tumor ward of XX Hospital with a year-long follow-up and return visit to the patients.Qualitative research method was used to collect the data of relevant persons(patients,nurses,doctors)and early materials(medical records,service records)through participatory observation and semi-structured interviews,and to analyze and discuss the case intervention of young women with breast cancer at the end of the year.This article takes Miss G as the object of service relying on more than five months' internship and nine interventions.On the premise of abiding by social work ethics,we collected and sorted out data of Miss G's illness,treatment progress and basic family situation.We used professional scales such as PHQ-9 Depression Screening Scale,GAD-7 and Self-rating Depression Tool to measure the mental health status of the patients.Through in-depth interviews with Ms.G,department nurses and their attending physicians,it is clear that Ms.G's current predicament mainly includes psychological predicament,physical predicament and economic predicament.Under the guidance of social support theory,the crisis intervention model and rational emotional therapy model are used to intervene in Miss G's dilemma,including integrating social resources,seeking social support,popularizing medical knowledge and alleviating negative emotions,etc.After the intervention,the change of the case owner has been evaluated and defined by scales and interviews.The evaluation results of the case owner have been significantly improved: the emotional predicament has gradually improved,the economic predicament has been alleviated to a certain extent,the tension with family members has further eased,the sense of self-identity has improved and the physical discomfort has gradually been overcome in the treatment.The case owner has been out of the critical state,can treat the situation rationally,and has established a certain social support network.Result shown that for the intervention of young patients with advanced breast cancer,we should start from two aspects: establishing the patients' inner beliefs and helping them to establish social support network,helping patients get out of crisis,getting rid of irrational emotions and linking social resources to patients.Moreover,respecting patient's feelings is also fundamental.
