Under the background of the continuous improvement of China's urbanization level,small cities and towns,as a bridge of communication and linkage between urban and rural areas,play an important role in coordinating urban and rural areas.Small cities and towns in the suburbs of metropolitan regions are located in economically developed areas.They are affected by the radiation,diffusion and surrounding rural hinterland of large cities.They play an active role in coordinating regional urbanization,regional economic and social development,and regional urban and rural coordinated development.Jinshan,Songjiang,Fengxian and Qingpu Zhonggu of Shanghai's western suburbs have been included in the national new urbanization comprehensive pilot area.Suburban small cities and towns rely on superior geographical location,rich development resources and a number of supportive policies,which have become an important link point for coordinating urban and rural economic integration and promoting regional coordinated development.The realization mechanism of the coordinated development of industry-population coupling in small cities and towns in Shanghai suburbs has important practical value and guiding significance for the development of small cities and towns in the future,urban and rural planning,and regional coordination.In the theoretical analysis part of this paper,it analyzes the developmentmechanism of small cities and towns in different radiation circles in metropolitan regions,the interaction mechanism of industry-population coupling in small cities and towns,and the development history and types of small cities and towns in suburbs of metropolitan regions.Based on the empirical research,based on 36 small towns in the4 th district of Shanghai's western suburbs,the entropy method,coupling degree and coupling coordination degree model are used to calculate the weight,construct the evaluation index system,calculate the industry-population coupling degree and coupling coordination degree,and analyze The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of industry-population coupling coordination degree in small cities and towns.Main research conclusions:(1)There are differences in the dynamic mechanisms for the development of small cities and towns in different radiating circles around the central city of metropolitan regions,which can be roughly divided into urban towns,suburban towns and remote suburbs;(2)The industrial development and population agglomeration of small cities and towns in the suburbs of metropolitan regions influence and interact with each other through different channels;(3)There is a significant coupling relationship between industrial development and population agglomeration in small cities and towns;(4)There is no obvious time series change trend in the industrial-population coupling coordination level of small cities and towns in the suburbs of metropolitan regions.The level of coordination depends to some extent on the economic and social situation of a certain year and the industrial-population development of small cities and towns;(5)In addition to small cities and towns with special development advantages,the industrial-population coupling coordination degree of small cities and towns in the suburbs of metropolitan regions presents a typical “core-edge” distribution characteristic,that is,the industrial-population coupling of small cities and towns increases with the distance from the central city,the degree of coordination in development is declining.
