Life is a process of continuous selection.In lots of choices of higher education,choosing a major is an important aspect.It is more and more significant for the whole life of students to make an educated decision,which not only influences on the personality and characteristics of students,but also relates to the direction of employment and the occupation in the future.In recent years,many colleges and universities began to launch the "categories of enrollment" policy,training in large categories before subdivision makes students have a major buffer and adaptation.Based on this background,the study is to investigate the current situation of major selection of college students and the major selection system in universities.Selected students of three 985 engineering college as the research object,using the connection of qualitative and quantitative methods and adopting the combination of literature research and field investigation,this research is to analyze the information of students,including influential factors of major selection,major satisfaction,major investment and degree of recognition.Meanwhile,the study is also conducted an investigation of teachers to understand the teachers 'attitude and view on the students' freedom of choice and analyze the institutional dilemma of major choice in universities and colleges.This thesis consisted of five parts: The first part is to pose questions and to introduce the research,including background,the purpose,the significance and the research methods.Then it is to investigate the major choice of students and the conversion policy of major selection in universities and colleges.In the second part,the study teases out the related theory researches and defines the core concepts.In the third part,the thesis conducts an empirical study on the current situation of students' professional selection and carries on the summary and discussion to the data results.The fourth part is the empirical investigation and analysis of major selection policy in colleges and universities,and the data results are discussed and summarized and analyzes the predicament of the major choice mechanism in colleges and universities from the view of the restricting factors and the existing problems,through the interview with students and teachers,the three major institutional constraints and three existing problems are summarized from the perspective of the organization and management of the universities and the construction of "student— oriented" professional selection mechanism.The sixth part is the summary of relevant conclusion and expectation.The results of this study show that: first,the professional satisfaction and recognition of boys are higher than girls,boys transfer majors less than the girls and their ability of rational choice are better than girls.Second,when it comes to the professional selection,the students from Beijing,Shanghai,Guangzhou and Shenzhen consider more about the recommendations of parents and relatives as well as employment prospects,the students from the provincial capitals and prefecture-level cities will independently consider the level of personal interest and teachers' ability of the major.Thirdly,junior students' professional satisfaction and recognition are higher than those of other grades.Fourthly,the degree of professional satisfaction of science students is higher than other subjects.Students of arts and engineering have higher professional input and recognition than those of other subjects.Fifth,the students' professional satisfaction in the colleges and universities which “enroll students in large category” are significantly higher than the others.Sixth,at present,the system policy of the professional selection of the colleges and universities is in a low degree of agreement with the needs of the students themselves.
