Due to the unprecedented rapid development of the Confucius Institute world wide,Chinese has become one of the most learned languages in many countries across the globe.But Chinese language teaching differs from one country to another.Through this study,we analyze Chinese language teaching in New Zealand.This paper is an empirical study based on teaching practice.Tauranga Boys' College and Otumoetai College,two high schools in Tauranga,New Zealand,are selected as the research objects.The strengths and weaknesses in the development of of the development of local Chinese teaching are summarized from five aspects,society,teachers,students,curriculum setting and the use of teaching materials.Its main shortcomings are the lack of cooperation of social institutions,unreasonable curriculum design and high moobility of teachers.In order to fiurther understand the current situation of Chinese teaching in local high schools,the author observes and studies the process of Chinese teaching practice in local high schools by means of observation and questionnaires,and analyses the problems existing in Chinese teaching in local high schools from the perspective of teachers teaching and students learning.For example,the lack of systematic teaching and a complete Chinese teaching design can not meet the needs of NCEA Chinese learners in high schools,the emphasis on vocabulary rather than grammar in teaching content leads to students'weak grasp of grammar,teaching activities that are weakly related,and students' loss of interest in Chinese learning.In view of the shortcomings of high school Chinese teaching in theTauranga area,we put forward some suggestions to promote the development of local Chinese teaching from the perspective of society,schools and teachers,for example,social institutions should strengthen cooperation with each other to increase the social influence of Chinese,schools should optimize the Chinese curriculum to guarantee students have time for learning Chinese.Teachers should improve their Chinese teaching level and organize teaching in a more systematic way,etc.In light of the lack of continuity of local teachers' teaching,the absence of a teaching curriculum to which to refer,and the resulting inability to meet the needs of high school Chinese language learners,we designed a NCEA Chinese course teaching program according to the New Zealand curriculum and the NCEA Chinese System.We hope to provide a reference to schools to promote the local development of Chinese language teaching.Seeing that the ultimate goal of this research is to enhance the students' learning motivation and improve the teaching effectiveness,we also provide local Chinese teachers and MLA with some ideas for improvement.
