A university will not only be influenced by its urban culture, but also influence it.Cheeloo University was the only Christian university founded by missions in Shandong Province and one of the earliest modern universities in China. The university was located on Tsinan after its colleges had developed in three different places.Tsinan was the first provincial capital opened as a treaty port decided by itself, which means that it was a city both traditional and modern. It makes sense to take the relationship of Cheeloo University and changes of Tsinan's culture as an example of the modernization in China.Cheeloo University started influencing each other with Tsinan's culture in a positive attitude since it located in Tsinan as a Christian university.Cheeloo University brought both advanced Western science and religion that was kind of alien to modern society.Cheeloo University on the one hand had to keep the purity of Christianity,on the other hand,it had to meet the needs of Chinese society to become an institution spreading science without religion. The staff and students of Cheeloo University recorded the material culture of Tsinan.Since they had had experience in modern cities, their evaluation of changing Tsinan can help us to have a direct image of the distance between tradition and modern. And we can know what was Tsinan like that time because of it.Cheeloo University brought the advanced Western culture and ways of education to Tsinan, varying from college education, primary education, secondary education to social education. In schools, the curriculum was good, leaning to vocational education. The campus life was colorful, sports was an important part of it.In various social service, students learned the responsibilities to serve the society, which would benefit the Chinese society. In spite the interference of political affairs, graduates of Cheeloo University were equipped with the knowledge and abilities they were supposed to have. The Tsinan Institute expanded the horizon of citizens, improved the quality of their life, spread modern science and culture, made Tsinan more popular, and attracted more visitors to Tsinan, making a direct influence on Tsian's culture.Cheeloo University recorded people's lifestyle in Tsinan. In the same time, they tried to change people's traditional lifestyle to the modern one.The education about lifestyle for students in Cheeloo University could make them understand why the modern style is better,so that the modern lifestyle would be spread. The staff, students and hospital all tried their best to serve the society of Tsinan.Their speciality in medicine helped the government and protected the city.Cheeloo University also got more confidence and experience in practice. The relationship with the city became better, which helped the development of the university, making the university and the city more united. And the educated graduates would benefit more in society. In terms of values,Cheeloo University approved of those enlightenment ideas in the complex ideas in modern China, objected to radical actions, and tried to stay away from politics. In the same time, they tried to guide people with Christianity. The missions tried to dissever Christianity from the political and economic actions of Western countries and got sympathy for xenophobia in China. But they did not actually reflect themselves and still felt they were privileged. The strikes of students and workers were deeply affected by Tsinan's culture.Cheeloo University started coeducation early in the extremely conservative Shandong Province. The university cared a lot about the girls but it did reflect the weakness of women that time. The influence of Cheeloo University and Tsinan helped each other, spreading from the province, the country to the world.
