Extra-curricular reading is a reading process which students could complete by themselves independently after class.This will efficiently expand their knowledge and could let the students have a clearer understanding of what they have learned in class.This also forms an important part of reading ability improving.The significant role which extra-curricular reading is playing in language learning is obvious.Based on the teaching experience at the Singapore,the author realised that there were many issues that primary school students have in extra-curricular reading,such as serious vocabulary deficiency,poor performance in Pinyin utilization and so on.By seeking a more effective strategy for improving extra-curricular reading for primary school students,the author collected a massive number of Chinese and foreign literature,and managed to understand more about the reality of current situation of extra-curricular reading,then revealed issues that exist nowadays and made a deep analysis of it by attempting survey,parents-interviewing and teacher-interviewing to students in 6 primary schools in Singapore,which are DN,NU,UT,MY,DL and SY.Among the countries where the English are essential for communication,by the influence of society,school and family,most of those students study the Chinese Language with a wrong attitude and is only for the purpose of passing exams.They rarely read articles in Chinese.Thanks to the intervention of the government by making the Chinese exam result as one of the key reference points of entering top-ranking secondary schools which made the students look at the Chinese Language seriously again.? Otherwise,the situation of Chinese Language learning will go from bad to worse.Attitude changing in Chinese Language learning,creating interests in Chinese article reading,increasing Chinese Language level are the major challenges under the current situation of Singapore in the Chinese Language education.By referring to a number of relevant articles,combining the? survey and interview data from 6 primary schools,the author analysed and summarised the issues that Singapore primary students have in Chinese extra-curricular reading and explained the reason why students are passive in Chinese Language learning in the aspect of families,teachers,schools,societies,and government.Based on the current situation,the author made a further thought for improving the reading ability in Chinese Language for students by proposing to the Government and Ministry of Education that it is important to take a serious look into the Chinese extra-curricular reading,as well as the training of reading skills,amend Chinese learning content where is necessary and encouraging parents to carry out parent-child reading activities,to read Chinese articles with their children to increase their interest and eventually form a positive habit in reading.
