In the process of rapid industrialization and urbanization in China,a large number of left-behind children have emerged in rural areas. The parent-child communication problems in families of left-behind children have a profound impact on the growth of left-behind children. However, only few researches have been conducted on how to improve the parent-child communication ability in families of left-behind children. From the perspective of social work, this study aims to improve the parent-child communication ability of left-behind children in rural families.By investigating the parent-child communication skills of left-behind children in D Village,Changshou District,Chongqing, this study digs into the current situation and problems existing in parent-child communication as well as the reasons behind the problems. It is found that the left-behind children in Village D generally have poor parent-child communication skills, which are mainly reflected in the following four aspects: low quality of communication, lack of initiative in communication, lack of skill in communication, and monotony of communication topics. In this study,a family with a typical parent-child communication problem in the village was selected to provide casework services to improve the parent-child communication ability of this family.Seven face-to-face talks are held in the casework services, and the topics of talks are: understanding the ABC theory of emotion, finding irrational beliefs, breaking irrational beliefs, building new emotional and behavioral response patterns, learning self-disclosure skills in communication, defuse emotional blackmail in the name of love, enhance the services and prepare for closing the case.In the face-to-face talks, firstly the ABC theory of emotion is used to eliminate client's the unreasonable beliefs that hinder parent-child communication, and reconstruct the reasonable beliefs that are conducive to parent-child communication. Then, according to the problems encountered in the communication between the client and his father as well as the client and his mother, the client is guided to learn the corresponding communication skills.Meanwhile, the researcher also communicates with the parents of the client to guide them to change their inappropriate communication habits with the client. Finally, the whole process and results of the casework service are evaluated, the problem of the client is solved, and the communication ability of the client is improved.By applying the operating methods of casework and selecting families of left-behind children intervention objects, and the left-behind children as the focus of social work, this study finds that the goal of improving the parent-child communication ability in left-behind children's families can be achieved through changing the irrational beliefs in parent-child communication, enhancing the communication skills of both parents and children and improving the unreasonable communication patterns in the family.
