Philip G.Altbach is a world-renowned expert on comparative higher education.He follows developments and changes in higher education worldwide.In recent years,in the context of deepening globalization and increasingly fierce competition between countries,"world-class universities" have become a forefront topic that has been widely discussed.Altbach made an in-depth study of the concept,characteristics and the role in global knowledge networks of world-class universities,and made a detailed analysis of the actual construction of world-class universities in many countries,especially in developing countries.Currently,our country is in a critical period of the construction of world-class universities and world-class disciplines,it is necessary for us to learn Altbach's world-class university educational thoughts.It is not only beneficial to enrich our understanding of the "world-class university",making us know the construction of world-class universities in other countries,but also helpful to provide some useful suggestions and ideas for the construction of the world-class universities in China.Specifically,this study includes the following aspects:First,it analyzes the forming process of Altbach's world-class university educational thoughts.The formation of the educational thoughts of Atbach's world-class universities is the result of the interaction of its personal education,research experience and interest,the background and phenomenon of higher education,the important influence of academic communities and ot her scholars,and the wide dissemination of various cultural tools.Secondly,it analyzes Altbach's understanding of the connotation of world-class universities.Research universities are the foundation for the formation of world-class universities.They have a unique internal spiritual culture,rely on a diversified higher education system,and can obtain a strong external guarantee.At the same time,the global university rankings are the evaluation criteria of the world-class universities.Only by being at the top ofthe rankings can the government,universities and the public acknowledge that universities are world-class.Thirdly,it analyzes Altbach's comparative study on the construction of world-class universities in some countries from the difference between the edge and center of global knowledge network and the important role of world-class universities.Atbach mainly examines the progress,strengths and challenges of world-class universities in the United States,India and China.The standards of world-class universities are basically the same,but the path to academic excellence varies from country to country.Fourthly,it evaluates the educational thoughts of Altbach's world-class universities,and excavates the enlightenment to our country.Atbach's educational thoughts of world-class university is rich in connotation,profound and realistic.For our country,Atbach's educational thoughts of world-class university provides useful suggestions to build world-class universities and become powerful country of higher education.We should perfect the system of higher education and view the world-class universities with whole thinking;we should follow the law of development,and prevent isomorphic tendency and blind pursuit of ranking phenomenon;and we need to protect the local academic characteristics and to create a dynamic balance state between China and the world.
