The popularization of science is as important as the innovation of science and technology,Mathematics popular science can popularize mathematics knowledge and skills,spread mathematics methods and ideas,and carry forward mathematics spirit and culture to the masses.The development and expansion of modern mathematics popular science in China began in the period of the republic of China.At that time,it was widely liked by the Chinese people.The number of popular science works of modern mathematics is very large,Some excellent popular science works published in the republic of China were gradually lost and lack of statistical collation.This paper collects 91 translated and self-written mathematical popular science books published in the republic of China.These works were counted by time,content,suitable period,publishing house,reprint times,biography of author and translator,etc.It has improved the sorting of historical materials and provided the reading index for modern readers,which has not been done by others.The overall characteristics can be obtained from the sorting results: The 1930 s produced the largest number of books on popular mathematics,most of these books mainly aimed at readers with a middle and high school level and pay attention to its teaching auxiliary function,a third of the translation works have been introduced revision,a quarter of translated books have been republished,and most popular science writers have had some experience of teaching in primary and secondary schools and translators come from all walks of life.In order to further explore the educational significance of mathematics popular science works in the republic of China.Case study and historical study are used to analyze the Mathematical Recreation and Essays in the United Kingdom,Riddles in Mathematics in the United States and some works of Japanese mathematician Lin He-yi which were spread in China during this period.Discuss its characteristic and influence in detail.This paper also made a case analysis of the The interest of ancient arithmetic and A grand spectacle of Mathematical games written by Chinese authors,and discussed their characteristics,historical status and educational significance in detail.It is concluded that the popular science works of mathematics in the republic of China not only contributed to the “Saving the motherland by science”,but also paid attention to the improvement of readers' learning interest and mathematical thinking and the atmosphere of mathematical culture.It also advocated the proper application of popular science knowledge in education and teaching.It is worthy of modern educators to inherit and carry forward the spirit that the writers in the republic of China worked hard to the old age,worked conscientiously and both carried forward the quintessence of Chinese culture and absorbed the new knowledge from the west.
