This study adopts the content analysis and follows its specific steps to select,classify and code the "small columns" in the PEP(People's Education Press)Student's Compulsory Biology Book 1,based on the elements of scientific thinking,the category of small column,the title of small column etc.Besides,it explicitly describes and analyzes the range and situation of scientific thinking at related small columns with the help of mathematical statistical tools.The results show that from the perspective of scientific thinking,the small columns involving scientific thinking in the Compulsory Biology Book 1 account for a high proportion,especially the “main columns”;the distribution of small columns of different elements of scientific thinking are different in type,quantity and character;the types and the proportions of different elements of scientific thinking involved in different columns are also different.Only "Data Analysis Column" involved all of the elements.Most of the small columns about the important concept involves the four elements of scientific thinking.It can be seen that the small columns can be used as an important material to cultivate scientific thinking.However,the research also points out the inadequacy of the small columns of this book such as the outdated content,the insufficient internalization of cognitive behavioral habits,the insufficient of basic conceptual columns,the insufficient of integration of scientific history materials,the incapacity of covering all the elements of scientific thinking at small columns of important concepts etc.Based on these shortcomings,this study proposes to update the outdated small columns,restore and integrate the history of science,create columns of scientific thinking methods,cover all aspects of the scientific thinking in small columns of important concepts and make the side small columns more attractive.At the same time,it is pointed out that in existing textbook,the small columns are large in number and rich in content.These advantages should be retained in the preparation of new textbooks.
