Tourism effect on poverty reduction is complicated, however, most of research is mainly based on small-scale case study, and the large-scale quantitative research is few,so that tourism effect on poverty reduction has been a controversial issue.Based on tourism-led poverty reduction(TLPR)hypothesis, this paper makes an empirical study on the effect of tourism on poverty reduction in western China, which is an attempt to extend the research from local to area.On the basis of expounding the complexity of establishment of TLPR hypothesis, the paper constructs a non-linear research framework, and then selects western China which is the most representative region of China's PPT(Pro-poor tourism)practice as the research area.Based on the panel data of 12 provinces in western China, the paper improves on the common practice in the literature by using the FGT index to measure poverty, and taking the tourism specialization, economic growth, traffic density and industrial structure as the threshold variable, take an empirical test on the threshold effect of tourism industry on poverty headcount, poverty gap and poverty severity, which is the first time in this field of domestic study.Estimation result showed:?TLPR hypothesis is established in western China, but the focus of PPT mainly on the poverty reduction efficiency rather than fairness;?Tourism effect on poverty reduction has a periodic laws, which is identified as four distinct phases:the initial period, the contradiction period, the upgrading period and the equilibrium period;?Tourism effect on poverty reduction is restricted by economic, transportation and industrial structure, moreover,in order to improve the fairness of PPT,regional economic growth is preferably no more than 10.7%,traffic density should be over 34.9%,and the third industry level is better to be maintained within the range of 23.4%?34%.Finally,the paper puts forward some policy suggestions on the strategy of anti-poverty and tourism development in western China.
