No matter in the researching of modern Chinese or in teaching of teaching Chinese as a second language,the studies on modal verb have never ceased.Starting in 1950 s,modal verbs were considered as a category of verb.Scholars discussed about the name,scope,and grammar features of modal verbs.Starting in 1980 s,Scholars studied modal verbs from the aspects of the syntactic function,communicative function and comparison of Chinese and foreign languages.In the field of teaching Chinese as a second language,teachers have done a lot of research of the modal verbs learning situation of foreign learners.The thesis tries to study how is the modal verbs confusion conditions of foreign learners.In first chapter,the definition standards of modal verbs are discussed.The thesis also decides which modal verbs should be studied.In second chapter,based on the corpus of HSK of Beijing Language and Culture University,the thesis does research about the confusion conditions of foreign learners.The thesis also discriminates the confusing modal verbs and compares the confusion conditions of modal verbs of the learners who come from different backgrounds of mother tongues.In third chapter,the thesis also analyses the reasons of the confusing conditions of modal verb,including negative migration of goal language and mother tongue,learning strategy and teaching.In the fourth chapter,the thesis expounds the problems of learning,writing and teaching modal verbs.The relevant proposals are offered from two aspects of the compilation of teaching materials and teacher's teaching.
