“Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School" is a group with double influence in the history of literature and films.Films with the participation,creation and adaptation of scholars of the school are a phenomenon with cross-media influence in early Chinese films.Since films of"Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School" are one of the most important branches of commercial films in Republic of China,research on them enable us to get a "panoramic view" of the film history of the whole Republic of China because of their important reference value."Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films provide a window for us to understand the films in Republic of China.Scholars of Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School tried to gain a foothold in the turbulent film market and displayed their "way of survival,and "patriotism" in line with the drastic changes and games in domestic and international situations as a generation of traditional scholars.They provided their own "China Proposal" in the process of domestic film localization,but were inevitably somewhat conservative,backward,and utilitarian owing to their own incomplete thoughts and entertainment spirit.This thesis starts from the theory of urban space and conducts an integrated study of the definition and types,originality and expression,and aesthetic expression of eiMandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films.The aim is to clarify the accurate definitions and historical evolution of"Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films,offer a fair and objective evaluation of such films,and present a more diversified and complete history of early Chinese films.This thesis falls into five parts.Part One offers an overview of "Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films,reviews relevant literature on domestic and overseas space theories,and discusses and establishes the concept of film urban space.Part Two examines in detail the historical background in the whole Republic of China for "Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films,sorts out their birth and development,and sums up their artistic features.Part Three systematically analyzes the similarities,differences and features for private space,family space,and public space.Part Four summarizes the space aesthetics features of "Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films for value appreciation.This thesis is a multi-disciplinary study integrating cultural studies,human geography,communication studies,and psychology.It adopts multiple scientific methods including literature review,text analysis,inter-disciplinary research,and comparative research to discuss how the urban space of "Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School,films is constructed and represented,and analyze the deep-rooted agents and power relations behind each cultural symbol and its significance.The thesis illustrates the cultural landscape and psychological symptoms of urban space in Shanghai in the Republic of China from the perspective of space.In the "childhood age,of domestic films,as the first generation of filmmakers,"Mandarin Duck&Butterfly School" has finished the "historical missions" assigned to them with the imported product of films.Their film activities,newspaper experience,story-telling techniques,and exploratory spirit have boosted the growth of domestic films at the“immature stage”and embraced the first "spring" for the development of domestic films.
