The social unrest and national integration during the Northern Wei Dynasty were crucial in the development of Chinese history. From the perspective of calligraphy alone, calligraphy in this period occupied a position that cannot be ignored in the development of Chinese calligraphy history. In the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Pingcheng period lasted for about one hundred years, with inscriptions everywhere. However, due to the limitations of regional factors, the inscriptions of the Pingcheng period were rarely spread in the Central Plains, which in a sense influenced the contemporary study of calligraphy at that time.During the 100 years, many ethnic groups merged and developed. The beautiful culture including calligraphy that was produced in this period has been hard to get the real attention of researchers. At present, the study of the scriptures in the Northern Wei Dynasty that we can see,and even the understanding of the "Weibei" in the past 100 years are all limited to the works of the late Northern Wei Dynasty. In fact, before the construction of Pingcheng,it has been rich in calligraphy culture genes. From the current research status,we can find that as the origin of the Weibei calligraphy,Pingcheng stone carvings and inks have not been attached great importance by the scholars of Epigraphy and Calligraphy, which makes the Weibei calligraphy weak in research. From this point of view, the study of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty is even more important. The purpose of this paper is to gather the remaining inscription stone carvings and handwritten inks in the 100 years of the Northern Wei Pingcheng period and its pre-and post-period,and to put them in the long history of calligraphy,so as to make Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty become the focus of the study of calligraphy and history.Based on the analysis of Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the previous research results, the paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. It mainly expounds the significance of research, the definition of related concepts, the research status and methods at home and abroad. The second part mainly introduces the general situation of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty with the background of politics,Confucianism and Buddhism in this period. The third part is to explore the whole process of the inheritance and change of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty by discussing the historical process of the formation, development and evolution of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period, the inheritance relationship between the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period and Lishu in the Han Dynasty, the inheritance relationship between Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period and Luoyang Weibei and the influence of writing style of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period on the calligraphy of inscriptions in the Sui Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty. The fourth part mainly discusses the inheritance of the calligraphy families in the Pingcheng period and the difference and integration of political culture and calligraphy families between the north and the south. The fifth part mainly discusses the significance of the Weibei calligraphy in the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty from history and reality. In summary, this paper comprehensively analyzes and deeply discusses the Weibei calligraphy profile, development and change, the difference and integration of the north and the south calligraphy styles and its significance, and then further analyzes its dual meaning. It will help to promote the prosperity and development of calligraphy culture in the future. At the same time,it will inject new elements and vitality into the development of Epigraphy.
