The International Chemistry Olympiad(IChO)is an important subject competition for teenagers in the world.As one of the important chemistry activities for middle school students,the chemistry competition is of great value.Although some scholars have researched the value and role of the competition,most of them are personal insights,descriptive reports and experience summaries,and there is a lack of scientific and qualitative empirical research on the value of the competition using scientific methods.Therefore,this study attempts to conduct interviews with the competition instructors and students in Jiangsu Province,and conduct qualitative research with grounded theory to understand the group's understanding of the value of chemical competition.These two groups belong to the direct participants and instructors of the chemical competition.They have more experience and understanding of the competition,and their knowledge is of significance for us to further understand the value of the chemical competition.The dissertation expounds and analyzes the current status of domestic and foreign research on the value of chemical competitions.Four contest instructors and three chemistry contestants were selected,and the original materials were obtained by interviewing the research subjects with a design interview outline.The grounded theory research method is used to conduct detailed and scientific analysis of the interview data,and to draw conclusions from the facts.The general analysis process based on grounded theory research methods uses a triple coding approach,including open coding,axis coding,and selection coding.Based on the analysis of the training and learning experience and personal growth experience of 4 contest instructors and 3contestants,Show their understanding of the value of chemistry competitions.The study found that the core value of the competition is "educate people",and the object of the competition value is the four levels of the state,schools,teachers and students.For the country,the competition is an important platform for cultivating and selecting discipline talents;for schools,the competition is conducive to enhancing overall strength and building a platform for discipline education.Students and teachers are the direct and indirect participants of the competition,and they are also the main group to realize the value of the competition.The value of the competition for these two groups can be divided into four dimensions: "professional academicdevelopment","discipline professional development","ability development" and "emotional quality development".From the nature of value,the value brought to the students by the competition can be divided into result value and process value.The result value includes: a discount for further studies or an opportunity to be sent to a prestigious school;the process value includes: professional interest orientation,expanding knowledge structure Improve self-learning,self-planning,rational thinking,cooperative communication,enhance the friendship between teachers and students,and temper the quality of will.The value of the competition for teachers can be divided into explicit value and hidden value.The explicit value includes: improving the teacher's status and salary level;the implicit value includes: improving subject knowledge,vision and understanding,improving teaching,learning,communication ability,and enhancing teachers.Life friendship and education achievement.Based on this conclusion,several enlightenments about teachers and students' participation in chemistry competitions in Jiangsu Province are summarized.
