Based on the theoretical basis of studying national central cities and urban functions,the article builds a national central city function index that integrates economic functions,technological innovation functions,international competition functions,radiation-driven functions,transportation access functions,information exchange functions,and sustainable development functions.Use entropy weight TOPSIS model,based on the relevant indicator data of 5 national central cities(Zhengzhou,Wuhan,Chongqing,Chengdu and Xi'an)in the central and western regions of China from 2014 to 2018,comprehensive analysis and comparison of the correlation and relative proximity between the seven subsystems of the national central city function evaluation index evaluation system and the level of urban function development.Then use SPSS software to carry out the principal component analysis of the national central city function evaluation index system,and empirical analysis and research on the comprehensive function level of the five central cities in the Midwest.The following main conclusions are obtained:First,based on the construction of the national central city function evaluation index system,entropy weight TOPSIS method evaluation method and principal component analysis method to process variables for empirical analysis,the five central cities in the Midwest have the same comprehensive function level,relative proximity,and main component score ranking.The rankings are Chongqing,Chengdu,Wuhan,Zhengzhou and Xi'an.In the past five years,Chongqing has the highest comprehensive score of national central city functions,and Xi'an has the lowest comprehensive score of national central city functions,and Chongqing ' s comprehensive functional level is far higher than that of the other four central cities in the Midwest.Second,from the perspective of the seven functional layers,the levels of different functional layer subsystems of the five central cities in the Midwest have their own advantages and disadvantages.The specific performance is that Chongqing and Chengdu have better comprehensive economic functions,Zhengzhou has lower comprehensive economic functions but has developed rapidly.Chongqing has the highest level of scientific and technological innovation function,followed by Wuhan,and Zhengzhou has a large gap compared with Chongqing.Chongqing and Xi'an have stronger international competition functions,and Zhengzhou's international competition functions are weaker than those two national central cities.Chongqing and Wuhan have strong radiation-driven functions,and Zhengzhou has the weakest.Chongqing and Chengdu have the highest level of traffic access function,followed by Zhengzhou City,and still need to give full play to the function of a comprehensive transportation hub in the Central Plains and even the whole country.Zhengzhou and Chongqing have the highest level of information exchange function,Wuhan and Xi'an are equivalent and weak,and Chengdu has the weakest.The higher level of sustainable development function is Zhengzhou,Chongqing and Chengdu,and the level of sustainable development function of Wuhan and Xi'an is quite and weak.Based on the results of empirical research,comparative analysis of the functional development level and advantages and disadvantages of the five central cities in the Midwest,focused on the advantages and shortcomings of Zhengzhou and the other four central cities,we put forward targeted policy recommendations.
