With the acceleration of globalization and the formation of cross-industry value networks,China's latecomer enterprises have developed rapidly and entered a fastchasing stage.Enterprises increasingly rely on their understanding of the competitive environment and their own capabilities to choose a strategic mode.If they want to extend to the high end of the value chain,they must improve their voice in the GVC governance position.However,inserting into GVC is essentially a behavior of strategic choice of enterprises in the corresponding links of the value chain based on market opportunities and their own capabilities.Moreover,there are huge differences in the technology and market scenarios faced by different enterprises when they insert into GVC,and the internal resources and capabilities of enterprises are also different,and they are all in the process of dynamic development.In order for a company to gain a lasting competitive advantage in the market,its strategic choice must be the focus.At present,scholars are more concerned with the matching of strategic modes and environment,and the matching of strategy and enterprise system.There are few studies on the matching of strategic modes and capabilities.In the aspect of GVC and the upgrading of enterprises,many scholars mainly study how to insert into the two ends of GVC,but neglect the middle link of the value chain.And in many practical cases,few scholars have studied what are the key competencies to support the upgrading of enterprises under the strategic mode of inserting into GVC,and whether they will change with the upgrade.The practice of enterprises also proves that the implementation of strategy affects the performance of enterprises.Therefore,in the process of upgrading,the matching of strategic modes and capabilities is particularly significant for the strategic management of enterprises.In order to solve the above problems,this thesis uses QCA(Qualitative Comparative Analysis Method)to identify the key abilities factors of enterprises in the GVC chain.Firstly,on the basis of relevant literature review,this thesis reviews domestic and foreign scholars' research on the issue of embedding high-end enterprise upgrades,sorts out its main theories and viewpoints,and summarizes and proposes the contributions to the relevant theoretical developments and the current problems.This thesis supplementary defines four typical GVC cut-in modes of enterprises at different stages,namely,standard participation,close following,following and undertaking,and OEM.In the end,the thesis adopts theoretical sampling for the four models of inserting into GVC,and a total of 34 companies are selected to investigate.It is identified that the enterprise relies on independent innovation capability,product development capability,brand management capability,imitation and innovation capability,and product pricing capability in the upgrade process.The fuzzy set qualitative comparison analysis(fsQCA)is used to empirically test the model.The results show that the enterprise needs to improve the imitation and innovation ability when upgrading from OEM to following and undertaking mode.And it is necessary to improve product development ability and brand management ability when the enterprise upgrading from following and undertaking to close following mode.If the enterprise want to occupy the right end of the Smiling Curves,it needs to strengthen the ability of independent innovation.
