Abstract/Summary:
Emerging adulthood, the ages between 18 and 25, is a stage of development marked by both opportunity and risk. Mental health disorders, particularly depression, and substance use disorders are highly prevalent during this time. Although the comorbidity of depression and substance use has been documented, this study extends the literature to include data from 100 ethnically diverse college students. The survey instrument gathered demographic and substance use data and assessed depression level using the Beck Depression Inventory-II.;Chi-square and t-test analyses were conducted to assess the comorbidity of depression and substance use while controlling for gender and ethnicity. One significant relationship was found between the depression status and the use of "other drugs." Implications for future research are discussed.
