| Driven by the rapid development of the software industry and Internet technology, more and more companies have begun to realize the importance of globalization, i.e., making documents such as websites available in various languages. The translation of textual components for target locales is an important part of globalization. This thesis describes the design, implementation and evaluation of the translation process of the CGF system (Cocoon-based Globalization Framework), which can be used to build globalized websites from scratch. Our translation process supports the main features of the computer-aided translation software, such as auto translation, search of the Translation Memory (TM), update of the TM which can facilitate the translation process, and support for Unicode (UTF-8), including both left-to-right text and right-to-left text. CGF stores data in XML format and provides tree representation of data to the users, and it can validate the source data and the translations according to a so called data definition created by the source data provider. Our design takes advantage of the separation of concerns (SOC) feature of Apache Cocoon framework, and separates user roles that require different types of expertise. It also provides great flexibility for future update, such as replacing existing components and addition of new components without affecting the operation of existing components. |
