Abstract/Summary:
The current Canadian agriculture system produces substantial environmental, economic and social problems that threaten the future of the sector. This paper explores the following research question: "Is the federal government sufficiently promoting and supporting sustainable agriculture in Canada?" I argue that organic farming best represents a sustainable agriculture model. Further, through analysis of recent federal government policy papers pertaining to sustainable agriculture, this paper indicates that there is a lack of needed government assistance for farmers seeking to convert to organic agriculture. The development of an organic agriculture action plan by the federal government is advocated, especially considering similar initiatives in both Denmark and the United Kingdom. Finally, I conclude that while political will for organic policy development amongst major Canadian political parties is lacking, current public concerns regarding the state of environment provide an opportunity for the introduction of an organic action plan.
