Abstract/Summary:
Like fire, social exclusion is a potentially damaging element that threatens fundamental human needs. This suggests that, like a smoke alarm, the detection of the signs of social exclusion is critical in avoiding this potential for destruction. This study examines whether this "alarm" for social exclusion is adjustable according to personality and/or situation. The results suggest little, if any, personality or situational moderation in the detection of social exclusion. Possible theoretical and methodological reasons for these patterns of results are discussed.
