The damaging effects of school truancy are so insidious that in 2003 the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention identified truancy prevention as a national priority. Unfortunately, surprisingly little is known about the foundation and/or reason for truancy. This paper explores the Truancy Intervention Program with the DuPage County Regional Office of Education.;This study was a quantitative data analysis of student school truancy in DuPage County in the State of Illinois between August 2008 and June 2009 (2008/2009 academic year). This study analyzed eight hundred and six cases of data from the Truancy Intervention Program. The information analyzed for this study was from the "TIP Data Referral" form used by Truancy Case Managers to investigate alleged cases of truancy and educational neglect. It includes data such as the juvenile's ethnicity, his/her gender, family dynamic, area of domicile. Other factors such as the type of school attended by the juvenile, whether or not the juvenile received public aid, type of school placement s/he was placed, type of intervention s/he received and the type of court s/he attended were also analyzed. Overall, this research attempted to determine what characteristics led to truancy.;The data within this study showed that the majority of female truant students were: high school aged, resided in a non-two parent household, placed in other types of school placement other than the regular placement, received other types of referrals or other interventions other than home visits and resided in the South and East DuPage geographical areas. The data also showed that the majority of male truant students received a home visit, received a local police referral, received a schedule change and received a court referral.
