Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how reading and writing influence student engagement and learning in the middle school math classroom. The data for this inquiry project was collected through journaling, field-notes, a student questionnaire, informal interviews, and triangulation. The findings suggest that reading and writing promote student engagement and learning in the math classroom. The analysis explains why reading and writing have a positive influence on student learning in the math classroom. Reading is useful because it assists students to see math in the "real-world." Writing is useful because it allows students to articulate their thoughts and develop a deeper understanding of math concepts. The analysis also explains why this teaching style is not best for all students. The implications express why I believe reading and writing should be used in the math classroom and the benefits of incorporating reading and writing in math.
