Abstract/Summary:
This thesis arose from the perception of a need for an elementary ceramics curriculum based on art history with scope and sequence from grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Literature addressing the need for elementary ceramics education, approaches to teaching art, and a model for encouraging creativity are included. This curriculum: provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to work with clay, provides teachers with a curriculum resource including a wide base of experiences and strategies to be built upon, and promotes ceramics education as more than a handicraft focusing on clay as valuable medium with rich expressive qualities unequaled by other mediums. This curriculum will give teachers a master plan which explores the history of ceramics as well as various techniques.
