Effects of specificity of training on ratings of effort in adolescent females

Abstract/Summary:
The purposes of this study were to compare the submaximal and maximal cardiorespiratory and perceptual responses to treadmill and Vasa Swim Trainer (VST) exercise tests between female adolescent basketball players (n = 14) and swimmers (n = 14), aged 13 to 18 yr, in order to determine whether or not any physiological or perceptual differences could be attributed to testing/training specificity. Four maximal sessions with progressive increases in intensity were performed in a randomized and counterbalanced design on a treadmill and a VST. Test-retest comparisons indicated that ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) are reproducible and have acceptable reliability during both treadmill and VST exercise protocols at submaximal and maximal exercise intensities.
