Abstract/Summary:
Environmental Education is defined in terms of its goal of creating an environmentally literate society, and by its process as it fits into the formal K--12 education system. A broad framework for environmental literacy is established through a situational example and then confirmed through the literature. The framework is expanded by use of a document entitled Developing Environmental Understanding, written by Milton McClaren, Bill Hammond, and Kim Fulton in 1996. An argument is then made for incorporating environmental education into our nation's schools with three primary methods described as the means to do this. Finally a school-based project is presented which attempts to incorporate aspects of the framework and methods presented.
