Abstract/Summary:
The thesis seeks to document and assess the constraints (i.e., barriers and costs) and advantages (i.e., benefits) of adopting ISO 14001 for organizations, and to assess the feasibility of ISO 14001 for agricultural operations.;A literature analysis was conducted to develop an explanatory framework to understand factors determining the extent and source of benefits that might accrue from ISO 14001 adoption, and associated costs.;In a survey of Canadian ISO 14001-registered organizations, 62% of respondents reported overall costs (internal plus external) equal to or greater than ;Survey findings also concerned the feasibility and usefulness of ISO 14001 to the agricultural sector. Lack of experience with formal management, lack of resources, lack of perceived need, and weaker market-drivers were cited as reasons why ISO 14001 is expected to remain less prevalent in agriculture.
