Abstract/Summary:
This work investigated the influence of social exclusion on processing styles. Specifically, I tested competing hypotheses, namely that exclusion triggers a processing advantage for local stimuli or that it triggers a processing advantage for global stimuli. Moreover, I examined the possibility that social exclusion's impact on processing styles might be moderated by fear of negative evaluation (FNE). In addition, a number of mediating factors were examined that might have explained any impact of social exclusion on global or local processing advantages. However, results failed to support the hypothesis that exclusion impacted processing styles in any manner (either directly or in a moderated relationship with FNE). Reasons for these results are discussed, along with possible follow-up studies that might better examine the predictions.
