Green building has been a concerned focus of architectural discipline, also the direction of national strategic.Research on green building not only requires the exploration of technical strategies in response to natural condition, but also the attention on humane environment comprising economy, culture, history etc.The concept of harmonious coexistence and adaptation to local conditions in traditional architecture shows the simple ecological ethics and effective response of the ancients towards environment, containing the humanistic environment and technical issues concerned by green buildings. Therefore, climate adaptability strategy and construction experience of traditional buildings worth profound research.Bohai Rim,Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta are the most economically developed areas in China down the ages. With abundant products, prosperous culture, advanced construction concept and techniques, traditional dwellings in these areas are of high research value. The common residential form in these areas located in different climate zones is courtyard house, characterized by the intermediary space materialized by courtyard and veranda between interior space and settlement environment. This intermediary space is an important living space, while possessing the function of microclimate regulation to the indoor environment. This paper focuses on the environment of intermediary space and its environmental adaptability. In the first part of the paper, types of residents in different areas are sorted out, with basic information of climate conditions, settlement environment and buildings. In chapter three and four, residential prototypes in different areas are extracted and then typical cases for further analysis are selected.Through field survey and computerized simulation, environmental comfort of typical cases is evaluated, followed by the analysis of correlation between environment and architectural elements, and summaries of the green construction strategy based on prototype.Due to the COVID-19 epidemic situation, field research in Pearl River Delta is unable to proceed,so the research of green strategy in Pearl River Delta is delivered through literature research, presenting in the first part of chapter five.Based on the previous study,in chapter six, correlation between architectural and environmental elements is explained first. With reference to climatic feature and environmental requirement, green construction strategy in specific area is elaborated and compared transversely among areas from aspects of group, courtyard, building, eaves gallery and enclosure.Based on the inferences above, further research on prototypes of specific area is delivered and quantitative conclusions are drawn, with the hope of fully exploration of climate adaptability experience of traditional dwellings, providing new ideas and technical means for the development of green building in China. This paper contains more than 150 pictures and 30 tables,in about 72,000 words.
