At present, the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt has become a topic of the times, and the protection, activation and utilization of the ancient towns along the canal in the post-application period are inextricably linked to the inheritance of the canal. The ancient towns along the Grand Canal in Yangzhou are the point-shaped units for the inheritance and development of the Grand Canal cultural belt and the material carrier of the canal culture. In the new era,the rapid urbanization process and the rise of ancient town tourism, the traditional ancient town protection theory cannot reflect the construction of the canal culture. The Grand Canal The historical style and spatial pattern of the traditional ancient towns along the route were deeply affected, and some ancient towns gradually declined and disappeared. After the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt is listed as a national strategy, the protection of the ancient canal town is of far-reaching significance for the heritage of the canal culture, the development of the ancient town, and the construction of the canal cultural belt.Based on the research background related to the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt and the protection of ancient towns, this article takes the ancient towns along the Yangzhou Canal as the research object. The historical evolution, spatial distribution law, functional characteristics and historical and cultural heritage characteristics, etc.,summarize the existing problems of the ancient towns along the canal;then,on the basis of the traditional ancient town protection theory, the concept of the construction of the canal cultural belt is added to construct the basic model of the protection theory of the ancient canal culture town. The model is then used to specifically propose corresponding protection strategies for the ancient towns along the Yangzhou Canal from the four aspects of "culture, cultural tourism, ecology and livability";finally, the protection of the ancient town of Shaobo in Jiangdu District,Yangzhou City is used as a research empirical study. The heritage resources and cultural characteristics of Shaobo Ancient Town are considered in conjunction with the canal culture, the existing problems of Shaobo Ancient Town are analyzed, and specific protection measures are proposed based on the basic model of Yangzhou Grand Canal Cultural Belt-Ancient Town Protection Theory.Through the overall analysis of the ancient town of the Grand Canal in Yangzhou section, taking Shaobo ancient town as an example,it is concluded that the ancient town is closely related to the Grand Canal in terms of characteristic functions, heritage protection, cultural inheritance, ecological environment and economic development. The existing problems of the People’s Republic of China put forward protection ideas from different levels,in order to provide a useful reference and ideas for the protection and development of ancient towns under the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt.
