Since the 1980s, globalization has been expanding its influences in various fields. As a matter of fact, it represents a new economic and social organizational form based on knowledge, i.e., creating social wealth via knowledge exchange. Therefore, academic exchange has increasingly shown its importance and the translation of academic papers has more frequently come into professional translators’views.Academic papers refer to scientific research records that exhibit new experimental research results or innovative theoretical assumptions or predictions, or scientific summaries of new developments in applying known knowledge. They differ from other English works in academic rigor, scientific style and progressive reasoning. Generally speaking, academic papers feature objectiveness and professionalism. Apart from the above two features, those on social sciences touch upon several subjects, which adds to the difficulty in translating and increases research value. The author’s early research has shown that previous researches on the translation of academic papers mainly focus on the differences between English and Chinese abstracts and corresponding writing techniques. However, few researches have been done in a comprehensive manner. Hence, based on two academic papers published on the Annals of Tourism Research and communicative translation method, the author concludes the particularities of English academic papers and put forward several common translation techniques so as to serve as a reference for future research. In lexical level, main techniques include abbreviation, annotation, adopting established translations and specification; in syntactic level, conversion, division, combination and restructuring are adopted; finally in discourse level, based on information reorganization, the author shows an integrated use of multiple techniques.
