Chinese psychology has been developing under the influence of foreign theories and rich empirical studies. To make it more in line with international trends, there is an urgent need to learn excellent research theories, employ the latest research perspectives and methods to carry out research, cultivate talents of psychology, and promote breakthroughs and innovations in psychology. The satisfaction of this need is part of the responsibility of translators, who can help introduce the foreign academic experiences as a bridge,as well as the starting point of this translation practice. The source texts of this report are two academic papers in psychology published in Journal inguistic Research. This translation practice is entrusted by a supervisor in the school of education and psychology in a local university. The two papers present detailed quantitative empirical studies based on cognitive processes and psychological factors of simultaneous interpreters. The source texts are characterized by preciseness and objectivity and convey accurate information. At lexical level, lots of terminology and noun structures are used;at syntactic level, diverse syntactic structures, mostly including complex sentences and passive voice, are employed;at textual level, tight cohesion and rigorous coherence are presented. All these characteristics bring some challenges to this translation practice.Based on the characteristics of the source text, the author chooses Katharina Reiss’s text typology theory as the theoretical guide.Compared with other translation theories, the advantage of text typology theory is that it pays more attention to the influence of text types on the choice of translation strategies as well as the criteria for objectively and comprehensively evaluating translations, which plays an overarching role in guiding this translation practice. The source texts of this translation practice belong to informative texts according to Reiss’s classification and the translation needs to achieve conciseness and strives to accurately convey information. To solve the problems mentioned above, the author categorizes the translation difficulties encountered at three levels:lexical, syntactic and textual levels and discusses appropriate translation strategies and methods illustrated in cases. At lexical level, the strategies and methods of literal translation, amplification, zero translation and conversion are used to solve the translation of terminology, nominalization and charts;at syntactic level, adaptation, linear translation, division, changing of voice and adjusting sentence order are flexibly employed to deal with different sentence translations;at textual level, omission and addition are adopted to achieve cohesion and coherence. To sum up,text typology theory serves as a significant guide to the translation of academic papers in psychology. This report confirms the applicability of text typology theory to the translation of informative texts. It is hoped that this report will provide some reference and inspiration for the research on the translation of informative texts in the future.
