As we know,English is a language tool for communication.English teaching should attach great importance on the quality of using English language which is focusing on the communicative ability,that is,to develop English language ability by some language activities like listening,speaking,reading and writing and so on in order to cultivate a healthy mental and virtual ability.However,affected by exam-oriented education system and the slogan that quality is the lifeline,more and more teachers spend most of the time on the practice of words and grammar,reading and writing to help students get higher grades despite improving students’ speaking ability.As a result,it leads to the problem that many students have no chance and are afraid of speaking English.As a rural English teacher from a middle school,the author finds out that students in our school are very poor at English and they have serious problems speaking English.What’s more,all English teachers think it really difficult to change the current situation of oral English teaching.The author realizes the importance of oral English and would like to research what results in the problem and how to improve oral English teaching.According to this question,the author has a survey and gets some results.First of all,students haven’t take actions although they are not satisfied with their oral English and can realize the importance of it.Second,English teachers have no high standard about their oral English and don’t focus on all-English class at all.Third,most parents don’t get high education and are not good at English.Meanwhile,the author analyses the reasons why students are poor at oral English from three aspects,that is,teachers,students and parents.For teachers,they consider the grades of students more than abilities,have no awareness to improve themselves and mutual activities between teachers and students and creations in class are less.For students,they have no clear goals and less motivation and have big difficulty in oral English.For parents,they can’t supervise and help with English for their kids.In the end,the author gives five suggestions mainly for English teachers.They are as follows: set up a thought of lifelong learning to improve the level of English teachers’ speaking ability;eliminate nervous emotion of students and emphasize on fundamental knowledge of English,build harmonious relationship between teachers and students,pay more attention to mutual class communications to create good studying atmosphere;set up creative thoughts and seek for flexible and diverse oral English teaching modes;develop the second class and richen after-class speaking activities for students.All in all,the author expects to change the serious situation of our oral English teaching through such ways above to help improve speaking ability for both teachers and students.At the same time,the writer hopes to get wider attention from other English teachers and gives some theory evidence and relevant value for other English education workers.
