English is one of the commonest languages,which plays an important role in international communications and cultural exchanges.Much attention is attached to English teaching and learning in China.However,due to the imbalanced development between urban areas and rural areas,there is still a big gap of oral English teaching between rural junior middle schools and urban junior middle schools.Therefore,in order to improve students’ oral English ability,it is very essential to know the current situation and influencing factors.Through oral English text,questionnaire and interview,this survey investigated the current oral English teaching and learning situation,the existing problems and influencing factors in D junior school in Dongchangfu District.Firstly,200 students were selected as the testing targets.According to the requirements in the third level of the Chinese Standards of English,this study was carried from the following six aspects: phonics,intonation,accuracy,fluency,relevance and expression strategies.Second,200 students were asked to finish the questionnaire and 12 English teachers were interviewed.Through analyzing the data,the result showed students failed to meet the requirements the third level of CSE.The reasons were as follows: teachers’ lower oral English level,less attention on oral English teaching,English and Chinese blended teaching method,simple and outdated teaching methods,less professional training for teachers;students: no good habits,less opportunities of output,shyness of making mistakes,dialect effect;school: no necessary facilities,no favourable oral examination system,no atmosphere for practicing oral English.According to the results,this study recommended suggestions for teachers,students and the school.As for the English teachers: they should change the traditional and outdated teaching concepts and methods,improve professional ability and oral English level,update teaching methods,provide more practicing activities and more input and output opportunities;establish harmonious relationship with students.As for the students: students should change the outdated ideas,attach more importance to the oral English learning,participate in more activities,develop a better habit of oral English.As for D school:provide necessary facilities and English circumstances,more opportunities of practicing and improving their oral English.For other aspects: strengthen teachers’ pre-service training and in-service training,improve parents’ cognition of oral English.
