| This is a report based on the translation of the suspense novel Somebody I Used to Know(Chapters 1 to 8)by a British writer,David Bell. This novel, whose Chinese version had not been found before translation, has been selected in the hope to stimulate Chinese readers’ interest in Western literature, especially in suspense novels. This novel is full of description of daily life, which seems easy to understand. However,it is rather difficult to clearly and accurately translate it into Chinese. This translation takes Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as a guide, focusing on the informational equivalence between the original and the target texts. With the guidance of this theory, the translator adopts the corresponding translation methods and skills to make the translation consistent with the information at word and sentence level,so as to guarantee the readability of the translated version. In this translation process, the author gained valuable experience.Meanwhile, the author has had deep awareness that as a translator, the theoretical level needs to be raised, translation capabilities should be continuously enhanced and the study on Chinese and English languages and cultures is always on the way. |
