As part of Chinese culture,Chinese traditional festivals are unique products formed in the long history of Chinese society. There are several different festivals displaying Chinese people’s awe of the gods, remembrance of their ancestors and desire for a better life. This translation practice takes Chapter 1 and Chapter 2,about 25,000 words, from the book Festivals and Customs,co-authored by Pang Dandan and Su Shan, published by Shanxi Publishing Media Group and Shanxi Education Publishing House. This detailed and instructive book introduces several Chinese traditional festivals and corresponding customs, together with many folk stories. The purpose of this translation practice is to explore the translation of Chinese traditional festivals and their corresponding cultural customs for foreign readers who are interested in Chinese culture. This translation practice is carried out under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s translation theory. This paper analyzes and translates the source text based on semantic and communicative translation theory, then sums up the corresponding gains and difficulties in this process. The source text selected in this translation practice contains plenty of traditional Chinese culture. The target text should not only retain the cultural meaning of the source text, but also faithfully convey the corresponding culture to foreign readers, which should be combined with Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory to make the translated text have high readability. This translation practice report consists of five chapters.First,it introduces the translation tasks, including the selection of the translation materials,as well as the significance of the translation practice.Chapter two is the translation process, during which the author first makes pre-translation preparation. In this process, the author analyzes the characteristics of the source text and finds that it contains plenty of traditional Chinese cultural contents. The cultural differences between China and foreign countries bring high difficulties to this translation practice. After much deliberation, the author chooses Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory as the guiding framework and adopts different translation strategies for the translation of different text contents.Chapter four is case analysis, which analyzes some representative translation examples in the process of translation practice. Then, the author summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice in Chapter five.Through this translation practice, the author not only hopes to improve her translation ability, but also hopes to arouse the attention of translators to Chinese traditional culture. The author hopes that it can awaken the identity consciousness of the cultural communication bridge in the minds of translators and make them realize that translation activities can not only promote cross-cultural exchanges, the introduction and spread of culture, but also realize the great will of Chinese culture "going international".
