A Dream of Red Mansions,as the pinnacle of Chinese classical fiction, has been translated into many languages and spread around the world, and attracted wide attention of scholars from all walks of life.Description is a common technique in literature.Through the use of literary language,it depicts characters, objective things, environmental atmosphere and so on,so that the works can successfully reveal thematic ideas with characters and story plots. The translation of character description is one of the key factors to the success of the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions.Based on the application of contemporary translation theory and contrastive linguistics, combined with Mr.Xu Yuanchong’s literary translation theory, the "Beautifying Potential" translation wheel, this paper makes an analysis and study of the translation of portraits, actions, language and psychological descriptions of several main characters in the Uyghur version of A Dream of Red Mansions, and summarizes the application of the "Three Changes Theory" in the translation of characters between Chinese and Uyghur. This paper consists of seven parts. The first part is the introduction of the article, which gives a detailed description of the research background, purpose and significance, summarizes the existing research results and puts forward its own opinions, and briefly introduces the theoretical basis supporting the research;the second part introduces the classification of character description, which is divided into portrait description, action description, language description and so on.Four types of psychological descriptions are discussed, and a simple comparative analysis of the four types of descriptions is made with examples in Chinese and Uyghur languages. The third to sixth parts discuss the characteristics of the descriptions from four aspects: portrait, action, language and psychology.Guided by the "three elements theory" of "beautifying potential" translation theory,a detailed translation analysis is carried out in combination with relevant translation examples, and the Uyghur versions of "three elements theory" are summarized. The last part is the conclusion, which briefly summarizes the article. In the process of character description translation,we should have abundant translation theories, correct translation strategies and methods, and appropriate translation techniques to achieve the purpose of reproducing the ideological content and image of the original text.
