| In the course of the development of human history, many material and spiritual civilizations have been created.Studying history not only helps us understand the past, but also has an enlightening effect on our present and future development.Compared with many countries in Asia and Africa,Latin American countries experienced colonial pain earlier and got rid of colonial rule earlier to get development, which is of significance to the development of other independent countries. At the same time, studying the history of Latin America can also deepen our understanding of the history and culture of our country. This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The translation source materials are selected from the work of Latin American writer Juan Jose Saldanha’s Science of Latin America in History. This report translated the second and fifth chapters,about20,000 words. These two chapters describe the development of science in Latin America and its important role. The second chapter mainly describes how new enlightenment ideas spread in Latin America, including the important role of personal libraries, publications, economics, and society, etc.in science communication, while the fifth chapter mainly tells how science played an important role in the independence process of Latin America. To be more faithful to the content of the original text and convey the author’s thoughts and opinions, this translation practice report is mainly guided by the three principles of Skopos Theory: the principle of purpose, the principle of coherence and the principle of loyalty. At the lexical level, the translator mainly chose the methods of amplification, omission and conversion to make the translation more fluent and meet the principle of purpose. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly chose split, passive voice processing, and word order adjustment to make the translation coherent. At the text level, the translator has mainly adopted reference and substitution, conjunction as the skill, which make the translation easier for readers to understand and accept. There is no Chinese translation of the book Science of Latin America in History. It is hoped that through this project, the translator can use various translation skills better and understand the history of science in Latin America better. At the same time,it is hoped that this project can provide a reference for scholars studying the history of science in Latin America. |
