The source text is selected from The Oxford Handbook of Food,Politics and Society published by Oxford University in 2015,which is compiled by Ronald J.Herring.Thirty five scientific and technological papers on food, politics, society and other issues closely related to human beings are incorporated in this collection. And the Chapter 17,the source text of this translation project, systematically discusses the application of biotechnology from the aspects of gene, agriculture and population. This report is written on the basis of the translation practice. And the report focuses on translation preparation, translation difficulties and case analysis. In the preparation stage, translation tools, parallel texts, text type and the CEA framework are described in detail. The difficulties involved in this translation practice are classified into two parts. One is words, the other is sentences. In view of these difficulties, the fourth part selects specific cases for analyzing under the guidance of Li Changshuan's framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”.Among them,“comprehension” involves polysemy and the sentence structure.English-Chinese dictionaries and grammar books are helpful to solve these problems.“Expression”includes technical terms and the intended meaning of sentences. In order to make the translation conform to the expression habits of the target language, parallel texts, online resources, text features, objective facts, context need to be considered.“Adaptation”contains the use of four-character words, addition and deletion. And “adaptation” can make the translation concise and readable.Base on the framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”,this report solves the problems of words and sentences involved in translation. It is noted that comprehension, expression and adaptation are equally important in translation.Comprehension is the basis of expression, and the purpose of using adaptation is to make the expression smooth. It is hoped that this report can introduce relative knowledge to those interested in biotechnology and provide some references for those engaged in biotechnology translation.
