| Russell is a famous British philosopher, whose philosophy has important research value.Russell’s philosophy has undergone great changes before and after, and his theory of truth correspondence is no exception.Russell’s correspondence theory of truth in different stages was put forward under certain philosophical background.Around 1898,Russell realized the limitations of Neo Hegelism, and gave up the monism of truth under the influence of Neo realism.Russell thinks that the carrier of truth is proposition. In this period,he did not point out that under any circumstances a proposition is true, but pointed out that when a proposition is true, there is a corresponding concept pointing to an entity. In the following years,Russell introduced the theory of truth correspondence in the process of studying mathematical problems. He believes that the carrier of truth is no longer proposition but belief, and truth and falsehood are the nature of belief. But true or false is not determined by the object of belief itself, but by a kind of correspondence.Faith or judgment is a relationship that connects the mind to something other than myself. When the subject of judgment, that is,the belief unity composed of mind and object of judgment, corresponds to the complex object, the judgment is true, otherwise it is false.Around 1920 s,under the influence of Wittgenstein and James,Russell’s theory of truth correspondence changed again. He still thinks that truth carrier is belief, but he understands belief as a state of organism. He still insists on a truth view of correspondence theory, but this correspondence relies on an isomorphic relationship between proposition and fact, and the truth lies in the correspondence between the formal structure of proposition and the logical structure of fact.Although Russell’s theory of truth correspondence has some limitations,it opens up a new way for the study of truth theory.Russell’s later introduction of logical analysis into the correspondence theory of truth has greatly promoted the development of analytical philosophy and mathematical logic. |
