A Report On The C-E Translation Of Autobiography Based On Newmark’s Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

This translation report is based on the translator’s translation practice of Yang Lan’s autobiography I ask,Therefore I am(excerpt).The translator encountered many difficulties in the process of completing the translation practice,such as the difficulties at the lexical level and at the syntactic level.Through the study of the translation process of this project and the analysis of translation difficulties,guided by Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory,the translator summarizes the corresponding translation techniques and methods,and aims to provide references for the Chinese-English translation of autobiographical texts.The autobiographical text has two obvious characteristics,authenticity and literariness.Authenticity requires the translator to be faithful to the original text,and the translation must convey the original information accurately.Literariness requires the translator to exert their subjective initiatives and use various translation techniques to enhance the readability of the translation.Newmark’s semantic translation theory emphasizes that the translation should follow the structure of the original text,so that the translation reproduces the original style;communicative translation emphasizes the reproduction of the original text information,so that the translation is smooth and natural.The two translation theories complement each other and guide the translation of autobiographical texts jointly.This translation report consists of five parts.Part one is introduction,introducing the background of the translation project,the content and features of the source text,the significance and objectives of the translation project and the layout of the report.Part two describes the three stages of translation,including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Part three introduces the theoretical framework of the translation project including the introduction of Newmark’s text typology and Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation and the feasibility analysis.Part four is the case study based on the semantic translation and communicative translation theory.Part five is the conclusion of major findings,limitations and suggestions.The translation practice is guided by Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory,and summarizes the applicable techniques and methods in the C-E translation of autobiographical texts,such as annotation,substitution and retaining the original sentence structure based on semantic translation;Paraphrase,corresponding translation,addition,omission,and sentence rearrangement can be used based on communicative translation;A combination of multiple translation techniques as needed based on semantic translation and communicative translation.It aims to provide references for future autobiographical translation practice.
