The appearance of Dong Qizhang’s academic writing is not only related to specific historical reasons,but also influenced by his own conditions and experience.The literary ecology of Hong Kong changed in the 1990 s.At that time,Newspaper supplements were shrinking.Literature lacked the mass market,and writers lacked material and institutional guarantees.At that time,education reform were being implemented.Writers with good educational backgrounds came to work in the college.Dong Qizhang’ novels won recognition of the college,and were included in the literature education system.He must shoulder the responsibility of education,so he has a conscious choice in writing theme and artistic aesthetics.In addition,rich reading experience and good educational background give him a broad literary vision.The long-term college experience has an impact on the writers’ novels,showing the aesthetic characteristics of intellectual,theoretical,stylized,experimental and so on.In terms of artistic style,academic writing is associated with knowledge,thought,poetics,rationality and other narrative style.And academic writing attaches great importance to literary elements such as style,structure,language and image.In terms of writing themes,Dong focuses on describing the growing state of young people in the college and the situation of intellectuals.In addition,he is concerned about Hong Kong’s historical and cultural identity and cultural conservation issues.Dong Qizhang’s academic writing has both literary and social significance.On the one hand,academic writing is dialectically united with literature and publicity,which is against the introverted tendencies of Hong Kong literature.On the other hand,he criticize the utilitarian commercial society in Hong Kong,shouldering social responsibility and adhering to humanistic care.However,academic writing has its own difficulties and shortcomings.The use of a large number of Cantonese dialects creates a barrier to reading,and impedeing the dissemination of the novel.In addition,novels are filled with a great deal of obscure knowledge,which keeps novels away from the public.Academic writing tends to fall into the risk of self-talk.
