The source text is excerpted from the fifth chapter of Teaching with the HEART in Mind: A Complete Educator’s Guide to Social Emotional Learning. The book is released by Brisca Publishing on Jan 17,2021 and there is no translation published so far.The author,Dr.Lorea Martinez Perez,a faculty member of Columbia University Teachers College has worked with schools, districts, and organizations and conducted extensive research on social emotional learning(SEL).The book, her latest research result, provides scientific information, and practical guidance and strategies that help teachers become more effective in enhancing the social, emotional, and academic competencies of students. This study is of great significance for the implementation of SEL both at home and abroad. The thesis consists of three parts: the source text, the translation and the translation report based on this practice.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory, translators’ subjectivity, and the study and practice of other related translation theories, the translator comes up with the framework: comprehension, analysis and adaption, and uses it to analyze a large number of cases in the report. The source text of the practice is informative text, which focuses on objectivity and logic. The main task of the informative text is to convey information and state objective facts. The key to translate such text is to deliver the same information in target text.As the audience of the translation, readers’ reading experience is the key to a successful translation, which coincides with the focus of the Functional Equivalence Theory. The Functional Equivalence Theory emphasizes the communicative nature and readability of the translation. It underlines the importance of delivering the information accurately and lays emphasis on readers’ acceptability. Therefore, the theory can play a guiding role in translating informative text. The analysis framework emphasizes the importance of understanding in translation, the key points in the process of analysis, and the necessity of making adaption. The lessons that the translator has learned through the practice include: constantly improving the translator’s basic literacy is a must, such as bilingual ability and the scope of knowledge;in addition, translators should continuously improve their professional qualities, making great effort to learn translation theories, keeping pace with the times in order to better gain the latest happenings, and using new tools to make accurate analysis and better decisions so as to improve the quality of translation.
