English reading skills are the foundation and prerequisite for developing other English skills,so it is important to improve English reading instruction.And the General High School English Curriculum Standards(2020 edition)clearly states that students should read at least 2,500 words per week in English outside of class,with a total of at least 100,000 words.However,in real learning,students’ extracurricular English reading is extremely scarce,and there are some problems such as lack of interest in English reading.Therefore,improving English reading teaching to increase students’ extracurricular reading,enhancing students’ interest in English reading as well as improving students’ English reading performance is an urgent problem to be solved in English reading teaching in China.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the reading circle teaching model on general high school students’ English reading learning.Therefore,this study conducted an experimental pedagogical study with senior students and posed the following 2 research questions.1)Does the reading circle teaching model help stimulate students’ interest in reading?2)Does the reading circle model of instruction help students improve their reading comprehension skills?The study was conducted on two classes of students(55 students in the experimental class and 55 students in the control class)in the senior class of Suixi General High School in Huaibei City,China,for one semester.This study used questionnaires,interviews,and English reading test papers to test whether the "reading circle" teaching model could improve students’ interest in reading and reading achievement.The collected data were also entered into SPSS 23.0 for statistical analysis,and the data were analyzed by descriptive analysis,independent sample t-test,and paired sample t-test.The results of the study show that 1)the "reading circle" teaching mode can significantly improve students’ interest in English reading;2)the "reading circle" teaching mode can significantly improve students’ English reading performance,indicating that students’ reading comprehension ability is improved.This study proved the feasibility and effectiveness of the "reading circle" teaching model with senior students as the subjects,and the research results provide some reference for other scholars to carry out the "reading circle" teaching model.In addition,this paper provides some teaching suggestions to guide the actual English reading teaching in conjunction with the research results.
