The source text of this translation report is taken from Chapter 10 Powders With Quasicrystalline Structure and Chapter 13 Powders for Additive Manufacturing Processing of Handbook of Non-Ferrous Metal Powders: Technologies and Applications,Second Edition. It introduces the basic structure of quasicrystalline powders and the main production methods, the basic principles of additive manufacturing technology and relative applications. The source text belongs to English for science and technology(EST),which has characteristics of extensive number of terminologies, complexity of statements and objectivity of language. In the process of translation, the translator refers to a large number of relevant literature, uses professional dictionaries, makes use of some official websites such as CNKI Translation Assistant,Google,Bing and Baidu Encyclopedia, and takes advantage of ABBYY Aligner &Tmxmalll to ensure the correct understanding of the source text and the accurate expression of the translation as far as possible.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, this translation report analyses and explores the guiding role of the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule in the translation process from three aspects, namely lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. The Skopos Theory mainly emphasizes the intended purpose of the translation. The translator needs to consider the cultural background and expression habits of the target language readers, and flexibly apply different translation strategies to translate the source text accurately and effectively. This translation report analyses the importance of the Skopos Theory in EST texts through a large number of examples, with a view to providing some references for the translation of EST texts. At the lexical level, the source text contains a large number of terminologies and noun structures. In the translation process, the translator focuses on the fidelity and coherence by establishing a glossary of terminologies, consulting parallel texts in the non-ferrous metals industry, and paying attention to the conversion of English and Chinese words. At the syntactic level, under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the translator explores and analyzes the translation methods of the passive voice, attributive clauses and long and complex sentences in EST texts,in order to make the translation fluent and smooth. At the textual level, the translator uses the translation approaches of repetition, supplementary, conversion and so on to make the logic of the text clearer, the translation more readable and acceptable, and be more in line with the expression habits of the target readers.
