As an important branch of English text,the study of EST translation strategies and characteristics is of greatsignification for practice.Thetranslation materials for thepaper are excepted from U.S.Navy Diving Manual.Those parts are about different areas,including control and maintenance of recompression chamber,neurological examination,first aid and dangerous marine animals.During the translation,three characteristics are found in the texts: first,massive use of proper nouns;second,many acronyms;third,large presence of inflicting languages;forth,great numbers of passive sentences which are employed to show the preciseness of language.Given the purpose of the translation practice of facilitating information exchanges between target-language readers,the paper focuses onproper nouns,acronyms,inflectional language and passive voice,U.S.Navy Diving Manual were analyzed under the guidance of Skopos theoryand summarizes strategies including literal translation,free translation,explicit translation and convert translationon the basis of some cases during translation practice.The paper is aimed to provide a reference for the translation of English for science and technology.
