A Group Work Practice Study On Improving The Communication Skills Of Institutional Caregivers For The Elderly With Dementia

At present,the situation of China’s population aging is grim,and the most prominent problem is the rapid increase in the number of demented elderly people.With the development of society,the institutional pension model is gradually recognized and accepted by people,and the demand for institutional pension for the demented elderly is also increasing.Institutional caregivers with good communication skills can not only reduce the work pressure of caregivers themselves,improve work efficiency,but also improve the quality of care for demented elderly people and pay attention to the psychological needs of the elderly.Institutional caregivers need to take care of a large number of demented elderly people at work,and communication with demented elderly people is facing problems,and communication skills are weak.Poor communication with demented seniors not only increases the work pressure of institutional caregivers themselves,reduces work efficiency,but also affects the quality of care services.In view of the fact that some caregivers in the S old-age care facility in Kunming,Yunnan Province often have problems with poor communication during the care of the demented elderly,questionnaire surveys,individual interviews,and observation techniques were used to evaluate the 30 caregivers in the S care facility It shows that most of the caregivers in the demented elderly have poor communication ability,which is mainly manifested in the lack of initiative in communicating with the demented elderly and the lack of communication knowledge and communication skills.In order to improve the communication skills of institutional caregivers,this study uses group work methods,guided by social learning theory,group dynamics theory and interpersonal communication ability process theory,to intervene from three aspects: enhancing communication awareness,learning communication knowledge and mastering communication skills.To help institutional caregivers improve communication skills with demented elderly people,with a view to reducing work pressure and improve the quality of care for demented elderly people.The research results show that the group work method has a certain effect on improving the communication ability of demented elderly institutional caregivers.Thepractical experience of the team working to improve the communication skills of caregivers in demented elderly institutions shows that it is necessary for organizations to introduce professional social workers to help institutional caregivers improve their capabilities and normalize their communication skills.
